Leadership in a Global Context – Lessons Learned from International work

2024-12-08

Managing in a global environment is not just about understanding different business strategies; it requires a deep insight of the cultural and structural differences that exist between markets.

Anders Bjurud describes his international work as a constant source of curiosity and learning. Understanding how different people and cultures contribute to success is both stimulating and challenging. Through his experiences in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, Sweden and Norway, as well as his contacts with subsidiaries in China, Vietnam and Germany, he has realised that success is often about prioritising what really counts.

”What is urgent always takes precedence over what is important,” says Anders. ”But a good leader makes sure that what is important becomes urgent.” By setting clear goals and deadlines, and ensuring the team focuses its energy on what really makes a difference, he creates a working environment where everyone can contribute to success. This leadership is based on identifying and prioritising what adds most value.

Managing cultural differences with pride

Working internationally presents constant challenges linked to cultural differences. Anders believes that adaptation is the key to success in different countries. ”As a foreign employee, you need to quickly show what you can bring to the table,” he explains. ”It’s also about celebrating what’s good in each culture. When people take pride in their strengths and are open to learning from each other, it creates a powerful energy and a foundation for development.”

By highlighting and reinforcing the positive aspects of different cultures, Anders has successfully built strong teams working together towards common goals. His leadership style is based on a thorough understanding that each culture has something unique to contribute, creating a dynamic and inclusive work environment.

Customising strategies for local success

Anders also emphasises the importance of adapting business strategies to the specific conditions of each market. ”A careful analysis of the local market’s business opportunities is crucial,” he says.

Gaining deep insights into how both product and service offerings meet local needs, and identifying whether successful ways of reaching out to the market differ, a well-adapted competitive mix can be implemented.

Local insights that change the rules of the game

Anders has also used local market insights to improve the performance of international businesses. One example is when he worked as a sales manager for wardrobes. ”We had a low-priced model without the possibility to sell to more interior designers,” he says. By ordering free-standing wire trays from China, which fitted perfectly in the wardrobes, he created a whole new product line. This initiative not only resulted in increased sales, but also led to a new and updated product line that is still on the market today.

His success shows the importance of listening to the market and acting on insights. Daring to experiment and test new ideas can lead to unexpected and profitable results. Anders Bjurud exemplifies how an open mind and a willingness to adapt can drive innovation and growth in an ever-changing global business world.
